Comcast says fiber cut causes nationwide service outage for businesses, customers

Comcast is beginning to restore internet, cable, and phone services across the country after a nationwide outage cut millions of customers off its internet, cable, and telephone services. "We again apologize to anyone who was impacted", the company said in an emailed statement.

A major outage is affecting Comcast customers nationwide, including throughout the Shenandoah Valley. The company is working to restore services. The lines are not Comcast owned, but belong to two different transit companies, the source states.

Per USA Today, the outage is now affecting Comcast customers throughout the nation, but the majority of reports are coming from Philadelphia, Baltimore, Seattle, San Francisco, and Atlanta. Other users on competing networks like AT&T seem to be reporting no issues whatsoever. It is now affecting our business and residential internet, video and voice customers. It is the second largest USA pay TV provider, behind AT&T, since its DirecTV acquisition.


The website said the problem started just after 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Philadelphia-based Comcast is the second-largest provider of cable TV in the USA with over 22 million subscribers.

According to the Xfinity status map, there are thousands of customers affected in our area.

A backbone network is a type of infrastructure that helps connect different computer networks. "Any one provider can potentially have a big impact on a number of users", she said.
