The men were reportedly all workers at an apartment block where the girl lived; some worked as security guards, lift operators and plumbers. Police have investigated the matter and arrested 18 suspects and are hunting for the others involved.

"A complaint was registered by the mother alleging that the girl was sexually assaulted by around 17 people at various days in various places inside the apartment campus", the official said adding that the investigation has begun.

The girl's parents lodged a complaint with the city police on Sunday after the girl narrated her ordeal to her elder sister.

"This continued till the girl on Saturday told her older sister, a college student on a visit home from Delhi, about the trauma she was going through", an officer said.

The decision came amid spiralling outrage over the rape and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir and several other cases of sexual assault involving minors in recent months. They also declared that none of the advocates in the state should appear in the case. Indian media also reported the accused men took the girl to a basement, terrace, gym and public restrooms. "Many of the flats were vacant so the suspects had little hindrance while committing the crime".

The victim's father who runs an electronic shop and her mother is a homemaker. In another case in June, three adults, including a school principal and two teachers, and 16 minors were arrested on allegations that they repeatedly raped a 15-year-old. "She assumed that her daughter was playing with friends in the complex", TOI reported a police officer as saying. Later, he called a couple of others from outside and they had allegedly raped her when they were under the influence of drugs and alcohol and recorded the whole incident to threaten her not to tell anyone about it. The victim was taken for a medical examination and a team of senior government doctors who examined her confirmed that she was subjected to sexual assault.
