Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown — Fake Twitter users

Some of Twitter's most prominent users, including President Donald Trump, saw their follower counts decrease by hundreds of thousands of accounts.

Christiano Rolando, who has one of the top 10 most-followed accounts on Twitter, lost 1.6% followers in a day from 74.6 million to 73.37 million.

Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers.

Twitter's official account on the social network was not spared from the purge as it shed 7.5 million fake accounts to drop from 62.85 million to 55.35 million as at press time.

Social media giant Twitter is on a major clean-up drive, deleting millions of fake accounts to combat social media fraud and "build trust in the website", in a move that could possibly become a headache for Indian politicians and celebrities.

"We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Gadde said in a statement. BJP chief Amit Shah also saw a drop of about 30,000 followers (11.3 million) since the drive started. While it excludes spam accounts in reported user data, Twitter noted early this year that monthly active user numbers would be "negatively impacted" by efforts to expunge fake accounts.

For Twitter, anyone who tweets a large volume of unsolicited replies, unnecessarily tags a large number of people or tweets misleading links becomes a suspicious user. By Thursday evening, the @POTUS handle had actually gained a number of followers, even though the numbers are still continuing to fluctuate a little here and there. The company predicted most users might see a modest impact, but that the loss would be amplified for accounts with large follower counts.

If your account has been locked during Twitter's purge, it will remain in the same state unless the owner validates the account and resets the password.

Twitter's decision to delete locked accounts this week has cost India's political leaders lakhs of followers, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's handle seeing a decrease of over 2 lakh followers as on Friday evening.
