The Oregon Department of Transportation said Thursday evening that the southbound lanes would remain closed at Ashland, Oregon, with no estimated time for reopening. Fire danger could prohibit rescuers from looking for anyone, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said at 7 a.m. Friday that the blaze had burned almost 8,000 acres and was 5 percent contained.

"It moved so fast I'm not sure how much time lagged between the evacuation and when it hit Hornbrook", he said.

A fast-spreading wildfire in California's Siskiyou County sparked on Thursday has caused the closure of Interstate 5 between Yreka, California and Ashland, Oregon, and prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency as the blaze has consumed 5,000 acres so far. A fire was reported around 9 p.m.in the 1500 block of Holiday Hill Road.

East of Los Angeles in the San Bernardino National Forest, authorities ordered the evacuation of the community of Forest Falls, which has about 700 homes, as a quick-moving fire swelled to 1,000 acres. At least 20 homes were destroyed by the blaze and about 1,200 people were evacuated.

The declaration states that the fire has destroyed structures and continues to threaten additional homes and livestock and the circumstances of the fire is "beyond the control of the services, personnel, equipment and facilities of any single local government and require the combined forces of a mutual aid or regions to combat".

Governor Jerry Brown on Friday declared a state of emergency for San Diego County due to the wildfires. We hope to replace this with a better map when it becomes available.

Hundreds of evacuation orders have been put in place, and flames have already reached multiple structures. Burning on both sides of Interstate 5 it kept going north at least another seven miles to another small town, Hilt, which is about a mile south of the OR border.
