The Spanish giants released a statement to confirm they had accepted Ronaldo's request to move to Italy in a deal reportedly worth €100 million (A$157 million).

Reports emerged previous year that Ronaldo was again upset with the club's President Florentino Perez over a pay dispute and was intent on leaving, although he stayed on to lead the club to a third successive Champions League triumph.

He said he had spent nine fantastic years at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid says Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving to join Italian club Juventus, bringing to an end a glittering nine-year spell in Spain.

Speculation had been mounting for weeks about the future of Ronaldo - who won four Champions League titles with Real - and the move will be seen as a big step forward for Italian football.

Massimiliano Allegri's side claimed a seventh straight Serie A title last season by holding off an inspired Napoli, but fell to Real in Europe after a dramatic quarter-final, when Ronaldo ended a thrilling fightback by the Old Lady with a controversial last-gasp penalty.

"I thank Juve, because if after Manchester I continued to win and to run, it was thanks to Juve". I am sorry it is like this and I ask all of you, especially our followers, to please understand me.

Ronaldo, along with several other top players in the country, has been accused of tax fraud, with authorities saying the government was defrauded of 14.7 million euros ($17 million) from 2011-14.

"Beyond the titles he won during these nine years, Cristiano Ronaldo has also been an example of dedication, work, responsibility, talent and constant improvement".

Ronaldo has been the scourge of Juventus in recent years, scoring two goals in a man-of-the-match performance in the 2017 Champions League final and knocking the Turin club out of last year's competition. And with them also, on an individual level, I have the satisfaction of having won four Ballon d'Ors and three Golden Boots.

Meanwhile, former Madrid president Ramon Calderon told Tuttomercato: "If Ronaldo were to leave Madrid, he would leave a gap that would be impossible to fill".

Ronaldo is now on vacation in Greece following Portugal's elimination from the World Cup.

Not only will this deal be a massive bonus for Juventus but also be a massive boost in their quest for European silverware.
