Trump wants to establish 'space force' as sixth military branch

"I'm not too keen on ripping space out of the Air Force and creating a space corps", Nelson said, during a briefing with U.S. Strategic Command head Gen. John Hyten.

- Mark Knoller (@markknoller) June 18, 2018BREAKING: Trump announces he's directing Pentagon to create "space force" as independent service branch.

At a meeting of National Space Council meant to transfer space responsibilities from military to civilian hands, president Donald Trump surprised attendees by ordering the top United States military officer to launch a new branch of the military in space. If it's created, the "Space Force" will prepare for war in space and protect United States satellites from harm.

Before making his remarks on the space program, President Trump also weighed in on the ongoing immigration crisis - blasting the U.S.' current immigration laws and saying the crisis is "the Democrats' fault". Mike D. Rogers, R-Ala., and Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., who said at the time that they believed the new service should function as a separate branch under the Department of the Air Force - such as the Marine Corps falls under the Department of the Navy - and could be established within three to five years. "That's a big statement", Trump bragged. "General [Joseph] Dunford, [chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff], if you would carry that assignment out, I would be very greatly honored also".

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space, we must have American dominance in space", Trump said at a meeting of the National Space Council on Monday. "An Air Force and a Space Force".

So what comes next? Trump simply proposed another wing of the armed forces.

"Only Congress can organize the military", Loverro told SpaceNews. And the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base in California, designs and buys most of the Pentagon's space systems, while also overseeing satellite and other aircraft launches.

Of course, no collection of memes about the new Space Force would be complete without Captain Picard.

Mattis argued that the Pentagon's priority should be focusing on getting its own shop in order before it goes about creating whole new branches.

Another US defense official told CNN: "The President's direction to begin planning is clear". The news came as part of a NASA event to discuss space traffic around Earth, held at the White House.

It may be true, as Deptula argues in his email, that, "segregation of space from today's Air Force aerospace enterprise risks undermining the synergy of integrated effects in the third dimension that took decades to develop and that now provide the Nation its warfighting advantage". "It's going to be important monetarily and militarily. We've always led", he added.

"Most importantly", he added, "any future exploration plan must be bipartisan". The House nearly certainly will be enthused by the presidential push for a Space Force.

Since then, USA efforts to explore beyond the Earth's orbit have largely focused on remote spacecraft that do not have human crew members, though American presidents have repeatedly raised the idea of sending human explorers back to the moon or further. "Organizational changes don't fix all the problems".

Others thought the president had his priorities screwed up.
