Trump Fires Back at Critics of Family Separation Ahead of GOP Meeting

The issue, which is dominating national headlines, first drew a statement from the current occupant of the White House's East Wing on Sunday afternoon, with Mrs. Trump saying to CNN that she "hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform".

The House is expected to vote this week on a bill pushed by conservatives that may not have enough support to pass, and a compromise measure that the White House has endorsed. Of the 12,000 children, 10,000 are being sent by their parents on a very unsafe trip, and only 2000 are with their parents, many of whom have tried to enter our Country illegally on numerous occasions.

Immigration authorities are sending every unauthorized border crosser, including those seeking asylum, to jail to face charges while their children are placed into government care.

The Baltimore County lawmaker said he was working with colleagues to "increase the number of family facilities at the border, so immigration officials can keep families together".

"Ms Grisham went on to say that "[Melania] believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart", a line which supports the president's recent policy decision to criminally prosecute all adults attempting to cross illegally into the United States over the southern border.

For the president's agenda to survive in any condition, he needs the Republicans to retain control in both houses of Congress - something that is put in jeopardy by these harrowing images from the border.

In the six weeks since Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the zero tolerance policy, almost 2,000 minors have been separated from their families.

"I don't think the answer to family separation is to not enforce the law".

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said he wants to do away with a legal settlement that requires the government to release children from custody and to their parents, adult relatives or other caretakers, in order of preference. She said gangs were everywhere in El Salvador: "They're on the buses".

"I know she's not an American citizen", the aunt said of her niece. It is a rare moment of bipartisan unity from the women who make up the small sorority of presidential spouses. "He can fix it tomorrow if he wants to, and if he doesn't want to, he should own up to the fact that he's doing it", said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

And the separation of children from their parents has prompted a huge backlash in recent weeks, with Democrats and even some Republicans criticizing the policy. If separations occur, Homeland Security would have to provide clear guidelines for how parents can contact their kids.

Senior policy adviser Stephen Miller: "It was a simple decision by the administration to have a zero tolerance policy for illegal entry, period". She's crying and begging me to go get her.

It's particularly striking, she said, to see Melania Trump take such a different tone from her husband.
