Doctor Sleep will be directed by Mike Flanagan, who helmed the horror movies Oculus, Absentia and Ouija: Origin of Evil. Variety's sources say King gave the casting his blessing. While there had been plans for a movie, Warner Bros. struggled in developing a budget. Following the success of New Line's "It", every studio with any sort of King IP under its roof has fast-tracked each property into pre-production. The Beginners star will play an aged Danny Torrance, who we originally met in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror masterpiece The Shining, which starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.

Ewan McGregor will be putting on his trauma-survivor hat for the upcoming Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep. His worsened drinking problem equally suppresses his pain and his previously titular "shining" ability. But when he embraces sobriety, his psychic powers return and he uses his abilities to help dying patients in a hospice where he earns the nickname Dr. Sleep. They've found that their powers grow if they inhale the "steam" that comes off others with the power to shine, when they are suffering painful deaths. Danny Lloyd played a young Danny Torrance. Considering the industry is preparing for the Castle Rock anthology series, It: Chapter 2, a potential Dark Tower TV series and a film adaptation of The Stand, it is a big moment for King's work.

Ewan McGregor can be seen later this year in Disney's Christopher Robin alongside Hayley Atwell.
