The White House also announced Trump would be leaving Singapore earlier than previously expected and holding a media availability ahead of his departure.

However, he played down the possibility of a quick breakthrough and said the summit should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

Last month, her threat to scuttle the summit and description of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence as a "political dummy" prompted Trump to pull out of his meeting with Kim, although he quickly reversed his decision.

Trump and Kim will be meeting at the Capella Hotel on the island resort of Sentosa and this will be the first meeting between a sitting U.S. president and the leader of North Korea.

On the eve of the first encounter between a sitting US president and a leader of North Korea, American officials are maintaining any resulting agreement must lead to an end of North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile threats. Mr Trump says signing a peace agreement would probably be "the easy part".

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Lee.

While the Air Force One carrying Donald Trump landed in Singapore on Sunday evening, Kim Jong-un reportedly travelled by a Chinese plane, deployed for his personal use, and was received by Singaporean foreign minister. He told reporters he thinks he will know nearly immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: "I will know, just my touch, my feel".

Liberal South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun sought to continue the legacy of his predecessor Kim Dae-jung by pursuing friendly relations and cooperation with the North.

Rodman appeared in Trump's Celebrity Apprentice reality TV show, only to be booted off because he misspelled Melania Trump's name.

As Trump and Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong sat down for a working lunch at the Istana house, the president sounded optimistic, telling Lee, "We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Ordinary North Koreans citizens are not allowed to travel, so seeing a North Korean in the flesh is a thrilling affair.

It's so far unclear whether the USA and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.

The leaders of both countries have already arrived in Singapore, but the actual summit will take place summit at the five-star Capella Hotel, situated on the resort island of Sentosa.

In a post on Twitter during his flight, Trump reiterated his optimism that the summit with the North Korean leader will be a success.

It's unclear what Trump and Kim might decide Tuesday.

For both men, the summit, the first between leaders of North Korea and the United States, is likely to be a defining moment of their careers.

In the lead up to the summit, North Korea rejected any unilateral nuclear disarmament, and KCNA's reference to denuclearisation of the peninsula has historically meant that Pyongyang wants the United States to remove its "nuclear umbrella" protecting South Korea and Japan.
