Sony Crushes Cross-Play Dreams For 'Fortnite'

Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a statement to the BBC today that doesn't deal directly with the core issue that players are taking issue with.

But the appeal of the Switch is that its portable nature allows owners to play when away from home, and so many have bought it as a second games machine.

Sony's PS4 has been the best-selling platform of its generation, but the company's response to the cross-play controversy completely skirts the issue and doesn't provide much hope that the company will reverse course.

So when the game launched on the Nintendo platform on Tuesday, many people found out that Sony was blocking them from using their third-party account outside of the PlayStation ecosystem.

Of course, there are other, more reasonable explanations for not supporting cross-platform play on certain devices. Switch players can now connect with every version of the game - except PS4, because of Sony's cross-play holdup.

We doubt this will appease furious Fortnite fans who are lambasting Sony over its unwillingness to partake in cross-play with other consoles. "To play Fortnite on Switch, please create a new account". Fortnite for the Nintendo Switch was released earlier this week, and like the Xbox One port before it, gamers are unable to compete against those on PlayStation 4 (although all consoles can play against gamers on the PC, macOS and iOS). The company could have decided it doesn't want to build the infrastructure/code required to support cross-console play, or it could simply want to keep as many people in the PlayStation Plus ecosystem as possible. It is also available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

"Fortnite is absolutely massive and it's only going to get bigger - it's about to come to Android - so Sony has got to start thinking about its closed-garden ecosystem". "Neither the "Fortnite" website nor Epic Customer Service are able to change this".

That's likely of little solace to PS4 players who want to take the game on the go with their Switch and who received no previous warning that playing on Sony's system would effectively hold their account hostage to that console for all time. "Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online".
