Rapper XXXTentacion was shot to death in Miami, the Broward County Sheriff's Department reported.

Tributes have been pouring in from hip-hop luminaries in the wake of his death.

Broward Sheriff's Office detectives believe Onfroy, 20, was fatally shot during a possible robbery after leaving the dealership at 3671 N. Dixie Highway.

A few minutes later it added: "The adult male that was taken to the hospital has been pronounced dead".

USA rapper XXXTentacion, real name is Jahseh Onfroy.

Onfroy released his second XXXTentacion album ? earlier this year, after releasing his debut album 17 in 2017.

The album tackled subjects such as depression and was praised by some of rap's most high-profile stars.

However, his short career was plagued by allegations of domestic violence.

XXXTentacion had been accused of viciously assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend, among other charges. The controversy has resulted in numerous articles calling for the greater music industry to not "co-sign", or endorse, his music, including one that was published by Pitchfork titled, "XXXTentacion Is Blowing Up Behind Bars". More updates will be added as they come. Last year, he reportedly won a distribution agreement worth an estimated $6 million, according to Variety.

Meanwhile, he faced legal problems and a quickly worsening reputation.

Kanye West, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar are among the artists to have praised his music.

"Rest in peace I never told you how much you inspired me when you were here thank you for existing". J. Cole had similarly kind words, calling him an "enormous talent" and saying he had a "strong desire to be a better person".

Friends and collaborators such as Ski Mask The Slump God and Diplo expressed their disbelief and heartbreak on Twitter.
