Porsche Gives Taycan Name To Road-Going Mission E Concept

The name, which is derived from Turkish, according to Porsche, and translates as "lively young horse", is a reference to the prancing steed at the center of Porsche's shield-shaped logo.

Porsche's first full-electric sports vehicle won't hit the streets until next year but the Mission E concept now has a street-legal name: Taycan.

The Taycan will be Porsche's first fully electric auto. Porsche claims a maximum range of over 500 km for the Tesla Model S rival.

The company has previously been talking about a 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration in 3.5 seconds and earlier this year, a Porsche executive said that the Mission E will be able to go long distances at high-speed, like traveling on the German autobahn, or to complete a few laps on the race track.

Porsche says the Taycan will feature two electric motors generating a total more than 440kW. Other electric cars can't handle repeated hard acceleration because their batteries will overheat.

Though Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine already took a crack at it, and a small cadre of the automotive press got to drive a prototype a few miles at low speed to tease the powertrain, the Mission E electric sport sedan continues to move at a tantalizingly slow pace toward reality.

Porsche has christened its first electric sports auto.

Porsche makes different versions of all its cars, ranging from from fast to extremely fast, and it's expected to do the same with the Taycan.

The other likely change is that the door hinges on the Taycan are going to change dramatically from those of the Mission E. The concept vehicle had rear-hinged back doors, effectively opening up the whole passenger cabin.

Porsche is talking about a 800-volt system that should allow a charge rate of up to 350 kW, which could charge the auto up to 80% in only 15 minutes. Finally, Porsche looked at Volkswagen's range of spare part numbers when naming the 911. Porsche US plans to install 500 such chargers across the US by the end of 2019. Still, previous suggestions have indicated a starting price in the region of $80-90k.
