Paris prosecutors have opened a investigation into alleged kidnapping, armed violence, threatening behaviour and attempted murder.

A pregnant woman is among those taken and the two others have been doused in petrol according to reports.

A street in the French captial has been closed off as police cordon the area. The hostages were held in a ground-floor office in a crowded neighborhood.

Police said Tuesday they could not confirm whether the man was armed. "His demands were really vague and incoherent", said an interior ministry official.

During the negotiations, the hostage-taker reportedly evoked a unusual mix of events, from the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center to the kidnapping and death a year ago of a young girl in an Alpine town.

The area around the incident in the 10th arrondissement of Paris was ringed off by police. The hostages have now been freed and the suspect arrested, the French interior minister announced.
