After the historic summit today between USA president Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, there's one clear victor: China.

Earlier, Trump and Kim held a historic summit in Singapore and committed the United States and North Korea to establishing new bilateral relations and building a lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

"President Trump appreciated that an atmosphere of peace and stability was created on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, although distressed with the extreme danger of armed clash only a few months ago, thanks to the proactive peace-loving measures taken by the respected Supreme Leader from the outset of this year", said a summary of the leaders' summit by the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency.

Using an iPad, Trump said, he showed Kim a short video made on his behalf, laying out the opportunities that could come with an agreement to eliminate North Korea's nuclear arsenal - a story about "two men, two leaders, one destiny".

"The issue's inclusion at the summit reflects the efforts of fierce lobbying by veterans groups in America, including Veterans of Foreign Wars, which wrote to Trump last week asking him to discuss the matter with Kim". It's going to start very quickly.

Trump planned to speak to reporters after concluding the summit, the White House said.

"I think the meeting was every bit as good for the United States as it was for North Korea", Trump said.

The White House said the daylong summit would also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders.

Elias-Fatile stated that the meeting which resulted to the signing of a statement by the two leaders emphasised the establishment of new relationship between them.

And since leaving Singapore, the president has tweeted that "great progress was made on the denuclearization of North Korea". You know, we did sanctions and all the things you would do but I think without the rhetoric, you know, other administrations, I don't want to get specific on that, but you know they had a policy of silence.

"We will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money", Trump told reporters, adding that "at some point" he wanted to withdraw USA troops from the South.

After Tuesday's talks, Trump said no sanctions would be lifted until the roll-back of the North's nuclear capabilities reached "a certain point".

"China of course welcomes and supports this", Wang said of the talks.

He also said he wanted to bring U.S. troops home - although he did not specify a timeframe.

On Monday, KCNA, Rodong Sinmun and state television used the same photographs of Mr Kim's arrival in Singapore and his meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana.

News of the decision to halt the drills stoked concern in Japan, with Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera calling joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea "vital" to East Asian security.

The Pentagon has reassured allies of its "ironclad" security commitments, after President Donald Trump cancelled its Korean military exercises. The current leader's father, Kim Jong Il, was a longtime movie buff who had thousands of titles in his film collection and once led North Korea's ministry of propaganda.
