During a revealing interview on Good Morning Britain - his first high-profile appearance since the wedding - Thomas explained that he told Harry and Meghan not to come and visit.

Describing his new son-in-law, the sixth-in-line to the British throne, as a "great" and "interesting guy", Markle said Harry "made a great pick" in his daughter, who has been a "princess since the day she was born".

Thomas Markle is a 1962 graduate of Newport High School in Perry County, Pennsylvania.

In a world exclusive interview with Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, he also revealed his decision to pull out just three days before the biggest day of Meghan's life left her sobbing - and that he cried on the sofa of a Californian B&B as he watched his "beautiful" daughter marry in Windsor on a small colour TV.

As for the invasion of his privacy after the engagement was announced, he said: 'I'm very proud of her, and I'll adjust to this. Like I say, I'm a footnote rather than the dad that walked his girl down the aisle.

Mr Markle spoke of the moment the Duke of Sussex asked for permission to marry the then Ms Markle.

"She's wanted children for a long time", Thomas said of his 36-year-old daughter.

But he said he was "honoured" Prince Charles took on the job of walking Meghan down the aisle instead of himself. "I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health", the statement said at the time.

He said: "My daughter is very intelligent".

He said: "Meghan told me first and then a few times after that Harry got on the phone with Meghan, they got on the phone together, and Harry asked for her hand on the phone". However he apologized to Meghan and Harry, who he said were "very forgiving".

"Watching it was hard for me, because I wasn't there, but at the same time. My daughter is capable of anything and she will be a compliment to the royal family". "They take all kinds of pictures of me making me look negative", Markle said, choking up.

Speaking about his treatment by the press, Markle told GMB that,"They'd take photos of me grabbing a beer, take photos of me getting into my vehicle. they'd take photos of me making me look negative". "We're really anxious about you.' They said the important thing was I get better". "But I still like Harry". Markle was also said to have helped fix the elder prince's relationship with his son.

The fact that Mr Markle chose not to discuss the interview beforehand with his daughter is likely to be seen by many as suggesting their relationship is fractured in the extreme.

"I thought that would be a nice way of improving my look".

She walked about half the aisle by herself, with Charles waiting further down to escort her from the end of the Nave to the altar. "I think he was open to the experiment [of Brexit]". I want to go to the wedding.

Speaking on this morning's Good Morning Britain, he revealed that he made the prince promise to never HIT HER.

"I've had respect for that woman (the Queen) since I was a child". I wanted that moment.
