Instagram notes on its new website promoting IGTV that mobile video content will make up for nearly 80% of all mobile data traffic within three years.

The company today launched IGTV, a standalone app that connects with Instagram to allow content creators and influencers to share longer, 1 hour-long videos on the platform.

IGTV is different in a few ways.

Mobile first: IGTV is built for how you actually use your phone: vertical and full screen.

Instagram has said it now has more than one billion active users, less than a year after it reported reaching the 800 million mark.

"We want to make sure they make a living because that is the only way it works in the long run", Systrom said. "It starts playing as soon as you open the app". There are tabs for "For You", "Popular", "Following", and "Continue Watching". From within the video, you have the ability to interact by tapping the like button, commenting, or sending messages via Direct. Total spending on online video ads in the expected to rise from almost $18 billion United States this year to $27 billion in 2021, according to eMarketer. We can hardly wait.

This will be interesting to watch play out as IGTV goes head to head with YouTube and Snapchat's explore feature.

There are also some hints of the defunct Vine service in there, appropriate, as some of IGTV's stalwarts like King Bach started on there.

Instagram has now hit the same milestone as other Facebook-owned social aps - including Messenger (1.3bn), WhatsApp (1.5bn) and Facebook itself which has 2.2 billion users.

Video will be available through Instagram or a new app called IGTV which will give Facebook more opportunities to sell advertising.
