Yamin Ahmadzai took Afghanistan's first Test wicket by dismissing Dhawan for 107, with Vijay (105) second to fall.

Afghanistan players celebrate Rashid's wicket.

Meanwhile, the opening pair of Dhawan and Murali Vijay provided a great start to India as the home side scored 158/0 before lunch.

This comes as the historic test match between Afghanistan and India will kick off from Thursday in Bengaluru city of India.

"I congratulate the Board of Cricket Control in India and the Afghanistan Cricket Board for organising this historic Test match".

Dhawan, the sixth batsman to achieve the feat in total, racked up 104 runs from 91 balls prior to the interval at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, with all but 10 of those runs coming in boundaries.

"These achievements have come about in challenging and hard circumstances".

Once the shine of the new ball was gone, Shikhar Dhawan pounced on the Afghan bowlers, skipper Asghar Stanikzai brought the spinners pretty early into play, off-spinner Mohammad Nabi was deployed in the 9th over, it was quiet but in his next the Indians got 12 runs and that was a start of the carnage that was to unfold. Before lunch, Rashid bowled 7 overs and conceded 51 runs from it.

Dhawan's unbeaten 104 is the second-most runs by an Indian player before lunch on any day of a Test after Hardik Pandya's 108 runs against SL in Pallekele a year ago.

This made him the first ever Indian batsman and 5th overall to score a Test century before lunch on first day's play. "But the key is to be watchful and take it as it comes".

Afghanistan - who were awarded Test status in June 2017 - rallied late on, taking three wickets for 16 runs.

Afghanistan, who have been forced to train in India since 2015 because of the conflict at home, have just secured a T20 series sweep over Bangladesh with teen sensation Rashid Khan now an global star. Kohli's deputy, Ajinkya Rahane will be leading the side in Bengaluru.

Rahane refused to draw comparisons between the spin attacks of the two teams, but praised the experience of India's Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as well as the talent of Kuldeep Yadav. India went into the match without its regular captain Virat Kohli, who is now undergoing a rehabilitation for a neck injury that he sustained during IPL 2018.
