"Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand", the company's statement reads. The last I'd talked with her, the night before last, she was happy, planning a trip to California to look at colleges. "One of the last things she said to me was, 'Reta, I know you hate funerals and don't attend them, but for me would you PLEASE come to MINE, at least".

Police responded to her apartment at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday after Spade was found by her housekeeper, Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said.

Kate Spade's husband opened up about her suicide to the New York Times on Wednesday.

Andy Spade said he and his wife had chose to take a break and had lived in separate residences for 10 months.

Spade is believed to have hanged herself with a red scarf tied to her bedroom doorknob, according to The New York Times, which reported that she'd left a note.

More than 140 Kate Spade stores operate today, offering brightly hued accessories as well as clothing, eyewear and home decor.

"There was no indication and no warning that she would do this", he said.

Asked why she wanted to get back into the industry, the Spades told Business of Fashion that they thought it would be good for their daughter "to see her mother work". But it is sad and very hurtful, given the pain the family is enduring, that people with no real knowledge of the situation are leaking false, speculative information that maligns Kate's character and belittles the health issues she bravely fought. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", Andy Spade added.

Since her death, further reports emerged stating she and her husband Andy, also 55, where living separately before she passed away.

"We were freaked out/saddened", Saffo said, "but she kept watching it and watching it over and over".

Also speaking out about the tragedy was actor and comedian David Spade, who is Andy Spade's brother. "So pretty I dont think everyone knew how f***ing amusing she was".

He said his main concern is protecting the privacy of their 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix, as she deals with "unimaginable grief". "I would never do that, ' and I believed her". "We went to the cash register and [the sales clerk] said, 'Are you on our mailing list?"

Members of the family have shared their memories of Spade to show the real version of her.
