Engine catches fire on Saudi Arabia's team plane

Incredible footage captured by the Saudi team showed flames engulfing the wing as the plane touched down.

Interest in football amongst Russians has soared after the national team beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the first game of the 2018 World Cup, new research has shown.

However, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation was quick to release a statement saying that the players are safe.

Players, officials and coaching staff touched down in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don on Monday following the malfunction, with footage of the drama posted on social media.

The team were travelling on a Rossiya Airbus A319 from St Petersburg to Rostov-on-Don, where they are due to play their second Group A match against Uruguay on Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia have landed safely in Rostov-on-Don after experiencing a technical failure in one of their plane's engines mid-flight. The Saudi team was seen calmly leaving the plane on its way to the team hotel in Rostov.

It comes after they lost 5-0 to Russian Federation on the opening day of the tournament in a woeful defeat.

On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia will face off with Uruguay, who are hoping to appease some worries after only beating Egypt 1-0 thanks to a late goal.
