United States governors sign letter backing Donald Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

It credited Trump's "firm stance" and "willingness to engage one-on-one with Pyongyang" for opening "new avenues" of "cooperation, friendship, and unity" between North and South Korea and the rest of the world.

"Ending North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons has eluded American presidents for decades", Ivey said in a news release Tuesday.

The seven GOP governors are in addition to 18 other Republican lawmakers, led by, Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind.), who have formally nominated the president.

House Minority Leader Jim Ward, D-Wichita, criticized Colyer's decision to sign the letter as a partisan move.

The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize has often been controversial.
