Mourinho said on the United website that 42-year-old Faria, who he has worked with since 2001, was ideally situated now to become a manager in his own right.

"I think it will be Michael Carrick", Mourinho told reporters when asked about a new assistant manager.

Mourinho was forced to make changes to his side that beat Watford 1-0 on the final day of this season's Premier League at Old Trafford.

"I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me, but his happiness is more important and, of course, I respect his decision, especially because I know that we will always be together". I've had ups and downs at the club over the years. "I will reorganise my coaching staff in a way assistant manager doesn't exist".

"I would also like to thank Manchester United and all the clubs where I have had the privilege of working during this period. I really respect him and look up to him because of the way he plays".

"This is an incredible place to play football and it's the greatest club in the world".

He led his teammates out for the final time and put in an excellent performance, with a trademark pass contributing to Marcus Rashford's winning goal.

The 36-year-old midfielder was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Spurs for £18 million in 2006 and has enjoyed a hugely successful spell with United winning five Premier League titles, one Club World Cup, one Champions League, one Europa League, one FA Cup and three League Cups.

Reports emerged that he had been seen driving away from the stadium in the hours before kick-off but Mourinho revealed a knee injury had kept him out.

"He was injured, he was injured Friday training session, yesterday couldn't train".

Mourinho added: "He had treatment at the training ground this morning".

"I'm waiting for the doctor but when it's impossible to play today, I have my doubts [for the cup final]".

"I'm sure the owner will try to improve the level of the squad and the team, try to improve the position in the table".
