Uihlein and Mickelson make big moves as Woods's putting improves

The result is a slew of players in contention due to a bunched leaderboard and the inability of anyone to break away.

Rory was three shots off the lead in second place heading into the final round of the season's first major - the only one to-date he has yet to win. He started the final round in the final group, three shots behind eventual victor Patrick Reed, and he was coming off a sizzling 65 in the third round.

But sometimes the mind works in mysterious ways.

That player is Tiger Woods, the 2007 Wells Fargo victor, who will be making his first appearance at Quail Hollow since 2012.

McIlroy, teeing off on the back nine, made a flawless start on his first hole, the 592-yard par-five 10th, chipping his third shot to two feet and tapping in for birdie.

The Northern Irishman mixed five bogeys with a double bogey and two birdies on a rollercoaster day. "Then hit a putt hard off again on the second putt, and the grain just ate it up".

"I always have fun". I remember all those. "If I don't make it, I'm not playing golf anymore". I have a pretty decent memory.

"I would have taken 68 before I went out there", said the world No 7., who birdied three of his first five holes. I was just hoping I could walk without pain. That's not a combination you would expect. The greens aren't running as fast and missing the fairway was not as punishing.

It has been a consistent two days of golf for Chalmers, but fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open champion, can not claim the same.

Thomas, of course, closed the gap with a five-victory season in 2017, including a win at Quail Hollow during the PGA Championship. He also won in 2010, and has five top-10 finishes here in the last five years. All three were tied at 2 over to start the day. "I've felt like I've played my way into playing shape now", he said. "I mean (Quail Hollow) is really long (7,554 yards). For me, it's about being able to go and use the champions' locker room and all the other cool stuff that comes along with it". He at least should get two more days to figure it out.

"I m feeling good".

Rory McIlroy reflects on a strong start to the Wells Fargo Championship and discusses his performance at the Masters. But he hit a poor wedge that led to bogey on the par-5 10th, atoned for that with a birdie on the par-5 15th, only to give back that shot with a three-putt bogey from 15 feet on No. 16. The cut fell at 3 over par.

"The Masters has become the biggest golf tournament in the world and I'm comfortable saying that", McIlroy said. "Tough conditions. Obviously wind was up and gusty, greens were firm".

"Today was a bit of a struggle through eight holes".

"It's amusing as I was hitting the ball left in the pro-am", he revealed. Par 5s Gained is another key statistic to target at Quail Hollow.

Upon his return home, he binge-watched a couple of shows, including Billions, got lost in a couple of psychology books - The Chimp Paradox and Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less - and did everything he could to keep his mind from wandering back to Augusta National and the Masters.
