Sentencing Underway For Nanny In Killing Of 2 Children

A former NY nanny was sentenced to life behind bars Monday for murdering two young children in her care five years ago in a case that tormented parents worldwide.

Kevin Krim, the father of the children Ortega murdered, 6-year-old Lucia "Lulu" Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim, gave an emotional impact statement, criticizing Ortega's family for lying about her background so she could get a job.

The judge expressed some understanding for Oretga regarding her mental illness and said it could mitigate some of her responsibility.

"I am very sorry, but I hope that no one will go through what I have gone through", Ortega said to the court through a translator.

Ortega never disputed that she killed the children, but instead pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Prosecutors said Ortega knew what she was doing and understood "every stab, every slash" as she slaughtered the children.

Yoselyn Ortega listens in court May 14, 2018, as a judge sentences her to 50 years to life in prison with no possibility of parole for the murder of two children in 2012.

Kevin Krim said his family introduced "Lulu and Leo's law", which will make it a crime to falsify job applications and references for someone working in childcare, to NY state legislature in "direct response" to the case. Jurors heard heart-wrenching testimony from Marina Krim, who spoke of coming home to her eerily quiet apartment and finding her children covered in blood in the back bathroom.

"She tried to destroy what Kevin and I set out to build, a happy family", said Marina Krim.

Marina and Kevin Krim left the courtroom before the sentence was read.

Ms Krim was later found by police crying and screaming hysterically, clutching on to her surviving child. But when they arrived, Lulu wasn't there.

Krim opened the door to the bathroom to discover the children's bodies stacked in the tub.

Ortega had cut her own throat in a failed suicide attempt.

"As Nessie grows up, she will be asking Kevin and me deep, unanswerable questions about life that most parents avoid talking about with their kids", Marina Krim said. Her lawyer said she had hallucinated an order from the devil "to kill the children and herself".
