Officer Shoots Student Who Opened Fire at Illinois High School

The suspect was taken into custody with what's believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The officer returned fire and struck the suspect, who was then taken into custody just west of the school, Howell said.

The high school remains the only school on lockdown.

Howell says the former student fired several shots near the school gymnasium and ran away when the officer confronted him. The officer, who was not identified, was placed on paid administrative leave as is standard in similar cases, according to the chief. His comments were echoed by Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, who in a statement credited "school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a risky situation".

Sauk Valley Media reports the former student involved in a shooting Wednesday morning is Matt Milby. The officer is part of the Dixon Police Department, an earlier post on the city's Facebook page indicated.

UPDATE: 11:53 a.m. EDT-The shooting at Dixon High School in IL took place on Wednesday morning inside the school's gym, where students were gathered to practice for graduation, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing City Manager Danny Langloss.

No students or staff were injured during the incident.

The suspect's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. Tragically, one person was killed, the shooter, Austin Wyatt Rollins, killed himself.
