Volkswagen Partners With Walmart In EV Charging Station Push

"Walmart is the flawless partner for Electrify America to bring electric charging services to EV owners who value their time". "The early success of Project Gigaton parallels ongoing progress in our operational efforts that seek to double our USA renewable-energy use and expand our customer electric vehicle-charging hubs to retail outlets across more than 30 states".

Additional power cabinets and charge posts can be added after installation, delivering a cost-effective and future-proof solution for expandable charge points that can grow as the EV base grows.

The new Walmart-based EV charging stations will reportedly feature 4-10 chargers each - presumably enough to allow for a number of open chargers at most times, even when vehicles are left there for a fair while.

A study conducted by the EV group found that those who have easy access to fast EV charging at places they typically shop or work are six times more likely to consider buying a plug-in vehicle.

Not only should this give electric vehicle drivers a convenient place to charge while they buy groceries and other essentials, it may also play an important role in making fast electric auto chargers a common sight for mainstream American Walmart shoppers. VW's first fast chargers won't be standalone stations like Tesla's are.

ABB has provided charging solutions as part of its drive to promote sustainable mobility since 2010 and has sold more than 6,000 cloud connected DC fast-chargers around the world for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Among some prospective consumers, "range anxiety" - wondering if they will find someplace to recharge their batteries during a road trip - continues to be a deterrent when it comes to electric vehicles. The company plans to build out 2,000 chargers in all, which will be constructed at 484 sites in 17 metropolitan areas and along highways in 39 states by the end of 2019. While VW continues to push electric vehicles with four important concepts in development, it now has only one on the market, the 125-mile range e-Golf.

Each Walmart charging station will have at least four fast-chargers and a slower Level 2 charger. As such, Electrify America intends to invest $2 billion over the next ten years to bring more electric power to the people.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in electrification products, robotics and motion, industrial automation and power grids, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Now, new Tesla owners have to pay to use the exclusive high-powered charging stations.
