Sega followed up on the critical success of Shenmue in 2001 with the equalling impressive Shenmue II for the original Xbox and Dreamcast. After that Shenmue 2 also released for the Sega Dreamcast with a port coming later on the first Xbox. In Japan, it will release on the PlayStation 4 only.

Shenmue I & II Is Coming To PS4, Xbox One and PC

According to Sega, the Shenmue franchise has established a passionate following and is revered as one of gaming's greatest series of all time. Both of the titles are regarded as cult classics, and Shenmue II is one of the most requested games for Xbox One backward compatibility even to this day.

We're told that the re-releases will stay true to the original and will come with the original feature set including jujitsu combat, investigative elements, RPG elements, and mini games. Shenmue I & II copies, both digital and physical, will be available to pre-order from first party stores and Steam soon. This re-release will be available either digitally or physically, have the option to use Japanese or English audio, the choice to use classic or modern control options, scalable screen resolution, and an updated interface. It might not be a ground-up reworking, but it looks like there's enough here to bring the games up to modern standards.

But it seems 2018 is going to be Shenmue year. The third part of the franchise will arrive a full 17 years after its predecessor, and will look to finally continue the story of the Shenmue franchise as a whole.
