After a series of intriguing announcements of the American company Ford has officially unveiled the new model Mondeo, fourth generation.

Ford says it will offer the most sophisticated range of driver assistance technologies ever seen in the Focus range.

Ford's director of product communications, Jay Ward, tweeted on the launch of the new Focus this morning: "It's here!"

Final details of the new Ford Focus line-up won't be revealed until closer to the car's on-sale date in November 2018.

Overseas, Focus will be available as a four-door sedan, five-door wagon and hatchback, Ford said.

The new Ford Focus will be positioned higher than the current one. In Europe, the Focus will use either the 1.5-liter EcoBoost or a 2.0-liter diesel engine.

Head-up displays have so far been typically restricted to range-topping cars and premium brands, so it's quite big news that the first Ford to feature a head-up display is actually a Focus.

In the back, there's more space thanks to that longer wheelbase, along with more kneeroom, and shoulder-room.

It is expected that two grades will be offered initially - Trend and Titanium - with the entry-level Ambiente, sporty ST-Line and new luxury-orientated Vignale to join the range sometime next year. "We'll tailor which cars in the Focus lineup we offer in markets around the world to ensure we best meet customers' different needs and preferences".

Ford places a lot of emphasis on the new Focus' technology credentials, with majority coming in the shape of driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control with stop&go (active up to a top speed of 200 km/h or 125 mph), speed sign recognition and lane centering.

Ford's Pre-Collision Assist system now detects pedestrians and cyclists and can automatically apply the brakes if it detects a potential collision.

The new Focus will also have improved "lane centring technology" when the vehicle is driven in a semi-autonomous mode, with radar cruise control. The engine will be mated to an eight-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

The addition of a petrol particulate filter has helped decrease carbon dioxide emission by 10 per cent, and the inclusion of idle-stop and cylinder deactivation systems has improved fuel efficiency.

The new Focus can be set to Normal, Sport and Eco drive modes which adjust the throttle, steering and auto gearbox responses to the driving situation, and also the suspension firmness on cars equipped with CCD. Not at the new Focus, that's for sure.

"We grabbed it with both hands, to develop the best mid-size family vehicle that money can buy".

"The Focus will eventually be Ford's entry-level vehicle in the USA and will still fill an important spot in the lineup, but Ford will likely reduce their marketing budget for Focus in the future as a result of importing it from China and shifting to promoting crossovers", he said.
