Gambhir, who was talismanic with the bat for his previous franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, and was expected to change the fortunes of his home franchise and replicate KKR's fine record in the tournament, has endured a torrid time with the bat this season. The first couple of games against Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals didn't go their way but once they beat Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium there was a glimmer of hope.

"It was absolutely my decision", said Gambhir at a press meet.

"Well I'm really loving the responsibility they've put up on me, also the faith they showed upon me".

Delhi Daredevils, who are yet to win an IPL title and have once again disappointed their fans as they are ranked at the bottom of the points table with just one win from six matches in the current edition.

Delhi Daredevils lost five of the six matches it has played so far in the Indian Premier league 2018 and was now ranked last in the points table. I feel it's my responsibility as a senior to think about what's best for the team.

However, after the first match, Gambhir looked a little out of confidence and could manage to score only 30 runs in next five innings. I completely endorse (Shreyas) Iyer as captain. "It is a great honor for me".

He clarified that there was no pressure from the management for him to step down rather his own call as he thinks this is the right time for someone else to take over and captain the team in the last half of the league. It's about what DD achieve, is what's more important to me than what I achieve.

"May be I was too desperate to turn things around and that can backfire". A big part of coaching is to ensure the captain's got everything he needs, and is well-prepared for the challenge. All-rounder Shreyas Iyer has been named as the replacement for Gambhir.
