The military said there were three targets - the Barzah chemical weapons research and development site in the Damascus area, a chemical weapons storage facility near Homs and a chemical weapons "bunker" a few miles from the second target.

It was, instead, about the use of chemical weapons, May said.

President Donald Trump is asking for a "prayer for our noble warriors" as he concludes his remarks announcing strikes on targets associated with the Syrian chemical weapons program.

The first of the targets was a research center near the capital city of Damascus; 76 missiles were launched against the center.

A top Pentagon official, Lieutenant General Kenneth McKenzie, said the action would set back Syria's chemical weapons program "for years" but he noted a "residual" element remained.

Two congressional representatives from Maryland reacted via Twitter to the missile attack launched by the USA and its allies against Syria on Friday evening.

Kamran Bokhari, a senior fellow with the Center for Global Policy in Washington, said the strikes appeared meant to avoid provoking Russian Federation.

Although officials said the singular target was Mr Assad's chemical weapons capability, his air force - including helicopters he allegedly has used to drop chemical weapons on civilians - were spared. The use of which, she says, "is inexcusable" and "illegal".

May 18, 2017: A United States airstrike hits pro-Syrian government forces that the coalition said posed a threat to American troops and allied rebels operating near the border with Jordan in southern Syria.

ABC News previously reported at least 40 people were killed in the suspected chemical attack. Pictures from opposition supporters circulated on social media showing lifeless bodies piled in basements.

"I have repeatedly expressed my deep disappointment that the Security Council failed to agree on a dedicated mechanism for effective accountability for the use of chemical weapons in Syria", he added.

The U.S. had no coordination or agreements with Russians before the strike, McKenzie said.

They said preliminary analyses indicate the strikes had significantly degraded Assad's ability to use chemical weapons ever again.

In coordination with Britain and France, Trump ordered air strikes against Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons infrastructure Friday night. The treaty does, however, prohibit the use of chlorine as a weapon.

"Russia condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack against Syria where Russian military personnel are assisting the legitimate country and their counterterrorism efforts", Nebenzia said, reading a statement from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In the Syrian capital, Damascus, hundreds gathered to show their defiance in the face of western attacks, honking their auto horns, flashing victory signs and waving Syrian flags after the airstrikes. It also appeared created to sidestep Russian forces in Syria.

"When he sees these sorts of things, they outrage him", said a source familiar with the internal debate at the White House. U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider, a Democrat, called for a more comprehensive strategy to deal with Syria at an unrelated panel discussion.

"A perfectly executed strike last night", President Donald Trump said Saturday in a tweet.

White agreed with the president, adding that "what happens next depends on what the Assad regime decides to do, and what the Russian government decides to enable".

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks to members of the United Nations Security Council during an emergency meeting on Syria at the U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S., April 14, 2018.

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said the attack was an act of aggression against a sovereign state and that the USA and its allies have demonstrated a blatant disregard for global law.

That sends a clear message, according the Syrian representative to the United Nations, that there is no interest in a "transparent investigation".
