Two Gilchrist County deputies were killed earlier this afternoon when they were shot by an unidentified assailant or assailants.

Ramirez had been a law enforcement officer for seven years and Lindsey was 25 years old, the sheriff said.

Law enforcement officials from neighboring countries, as well as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the state attorney's office are assisting in the ongoing investigation, Schultz said.

The suspect shot both deputies through the window at about 3 p.m., the statement said, and when their GCSO colleagues arrived, the alleged perpetrator was found dead outside the building.

No other information was immediately available.

The first reports of the shooting came in a vaguely-worded tweet from the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office, saying a "terrible tragedy" had occurred. The sheriff has been speaking with the families affected, the department said.
