You'll soon be able to upgrade from Windows 10 S for free

This is the official confirmation that the official version of Windows 10 S as an isolated OS is being abandoned. Though Belfiore didn't provide details, he did say there are more than twenty devices with Windows 10 S enabled. Microsoft expects that Windows 10 S-mode enabled devices will start shipping in the coming months from its partners. Belfiore called out the security, faster boot time, better battery life and consistent performance that Windows 10's S mode produces. All the users who bought a PC with Windows 10 S installed will be able to switch to the full Windows 10 version for free instead of paying $49 like before. Which is hardly a ringing endorsement of Windows 10 in its dominant configuration! What we now know, though, is that Windows 10's S mode is far more important to Microsoft than it originally seemed.


The main cause is probably the shortage of apps in the Microsoft Store.

"By offering multiple experiences to our Insiders, we're able to hear multiple points of view, along with preferences on the best set up experience that showcases privacy set up choices", Marisa Rogers, privacy officer for Microsoft's Windows & Devices Group, wrote yesterday in a blog post.
