The sixth candidate is educationist Ashfaq Karim, also from the RJD, who runs a medical college in Katihar. BJP general secretary Saroj Pandey has been fielded from poll-bound Chhattisgarh, while party spokerperson Anil Baluni will file his nominations from Uttarakhand.

The BJP on Monday queered the pitch for Rajya Sabha elections by fielding additional candidates in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, putting to test the attempts to forge an Opposition alliance.

The Sena has 63 MLAs, but the Congress does not expect to receive its surplus votes despite the smaller partner's anger at the BJP. But the poll arithmetic in the Bihar Vidhan Sabha and RJD's surplus votes prevented it.

As each candidate needs 45 votes to win the contest, the Congress is in a position to get two of its nominees elected easily, while its third candidate with 37 votes will have to get 13 more votes to make up for the shortfall. In total, for now, seven candidates will be trying for six seats. The Congress with 27 MLAs, is banking on the RJD which has nine surplus members with 79 MLAs. Of all, 7 seats are vacant.
