To encourage women work force in Railways and to develop their moral and self confidence, South Central Railway (SCR) on Thursday, coinciding with International Women Day, launched four "All Women Railway Stations".

On February 20, Gandhi Nagar in Rajasthan became the first mainline railway station in the country to be managed entirely by women. Currently, a total of 41women staffers, including 17 booking clerks, six RPF personnel, eight ticket-checkers, five point persons, two railway announcers and three cleaning staffers are working at Matunga under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni.

The SCR had on Tuesday announced that the Begumpet Railway Station would become an all women station from Thursday, along with the Chandragiri and Phirangipuram railway stations. "These staff shall be handling overall operations of Matunga Road station around the clock". Sources said railway authorities are roping in women, more or less, for all posts, from loco pilots to clerks in different departments to RPF personnel. "In a unique endeavour to ensure women's empowerment, the Western Railway has appointed all-women staff at its suburban Matunga Road station. Besides, we also formed separate women ticket checking squads for ladies coaches, apart from making women's waiting halls and baby feeding cabins". "The female passengers are welcomed to give their suggestions like what changes they want in trains which can help them and they can also tell their problems to the women staff who will be sitting at the help desk", said SK Jain.
