NVIDIA announces real time ray tracing tech, prepare for cinematic quality graphics

Nvidia RTX technology aims to bring "real-time movie quality rendering to game developers" and is now highly optimised for the Volta graphics architecture. The reason behind this is that raytracing's rendering techniques are way faster and more efficient than what path tracing has to offer.

PCPerspective is on scene reporting about NVIDIA RTX Technology, which NVIDIA is calling a combination of hardware and software to improve the performance of ray tracing algorithms on NVIDIA hardware, working hand and hand with DXR. He added that RTX will be "a "turn it up to 11" kind of feature" initially, with developers "layering in some ray tracing effects on top of rasterization-based techniques".

"The availability of NVIDIA RTX opens the door to make real-time ray tracing a reality", said Kim Libreri, chief technology officer at Epic Games.


Video game graphics have advanced quite a bit over the past decade or so but developers have never been able to reach true photorealism.

However, and while some gamers are excited about this, we should temper everyone's expectations. This suite of tools and resources for developers will dramatically increase realism and shorten product cycles in titles developed using the new Microsoft DXR API and NVIDIA RTX. The new DXR API is said to support the latest game engines, including Unreal Engine 4, Unity 5, and DICE's Frostbite, and Nvidia claimed we would see games with the new technology hit shelves this year.

The upcoming GameWorks SDK - which will support Volta and future generation GPU architectures - enables ray-traced area shadows, ray-traced glossy reflections and ray-traced ambient occlusion. It creates highly realistic scenes and lighting details, but also takes up a lot of processing power, so it has typically been left out of video games. This technology is created to provide developers with an extra layer of realism to add into their games.

That doesn't mean you'll start to see this in games immediately - RTX requires Nvidia's new Volta line of GPUs, and the company hasn't even unveiled any consumer-level Volta graphics cards yet.

Microsoft says PIX for Windows will support the DirectX Raytracing API as soon as the API is released. Features, pricing, availability and specifications are subject to change without notice.
