The surprising, however, was the response of Asif Ali Zardari, the Co-Chairman of PPP, who instead of supporting the idea of bringing a unanimous candidate and that too from his own party, rejected the idea of reinstating Raza Rabbani.

Regarding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan's stand for Senate chairman from Balochistan, he said that Khan made a good decision.

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi met with ousted premier Sharif and exchanged views on the upcoming elections for the Senate chairman and deputy chairman positions.

The federal capital witnessed another hectic day of political manoeuvrings on Thursday, with Balochistan House becoming the centre of activities after arrival of six independent senators-elect from the province in the city along with Chief Minister Abdul Quddus Bizenjo and PML-N dissident and former deputy chairman of the Senate Jan Muhammad Jamali.

"There is a consensus within our party that our senators will neither vote for PML-N or the PPP", Khan told media persons in Islamabad.

It will be the second meeting of ruling party within a week over nominations for Senate deputy and chairman seats.

He revealed that no any PML-N delegation contacted his group, adding that he can speak with the government on this issue.

During a PML-N meeting chaired by Nawaz Sharif, reports on efforts to gain support of other political parties for elections of the top slots in Upper House were presented by Kh Saad Rafique, Mushahidullah Khan, Ayaz Sadiq and Musahid Hussain.

Talking to reporters after a meeting with Mr Bizenjo, Imran Khan said the PTI wanted to see the next Senate chairman from Balochistan.

"PML-N itself is accustomed of "Halala" as it ruled the Punjab province in the past on a stay order granted by the Court after forming a PML-Q forward block", Nafisa Shah said.

Addressing a joint press conference with Bizenjo, Imran said that it would be a great achievement if - for the first time in the country's history - the chairman of Senate will be elected from Balochistan. He said Mr Achakzai, Maulana Fazl and Mr Bizenjo were with the party and they had the required numbers in the Senate.
