The app also harvested the personal information of users' friends even if those friends didn't download or otherwise use the app.

In a statement issued Monday, Cambridge Analytica charged that the video was "edited and scripted to grossly misrepresent the nature of those conversations and how the company conducts its business".

But Kogan said the accuracy of the dataset had been "exaggerated" by Cambridge Analytica, and that the information was more likely to hurt Trump's campaign. "There's no evidence, there's no paper trail, there's nothing".

The chairman of the United Kingdom parliamentary media committee, Damian Collins, said Tuesday that his group has repeatedly asked Facebook how it uses data and that Facebook officials "have been misleading to the committee". Facebook now has over 2.2 billion users, who share a big part of their lives on the platform.

Notably, Calacanis did say it'd be a good opportunity for an entrepreneur to "come in and create a competitor", of which there have been many that have come, tried, and failed to topple Facebook.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has been summoned by a British parliamentary committee to answer questions as to how the data was accessed.

'Given your commitment at the start of the New Year to "fixing" Facebook, I hope that this representative will be you'.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg will address employees of the social network on Friday at a previously scheduled all-hands meeting, where he's likely to face questions about the controversy over user data improperly obtained by political-advertising firm Cambridge Analytica. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, called Facebook's latest privacy scandal a "danger signal".

Facebook sidestepped questions on whether Zuckerberg would appear, saying instead that it's now focused on conducting its own reviews.

Britain's information commissioner says she is using all her legal powers to investigate Facebook and political campaign consultants Cambridge Analytica over the alleged misuse of millions of people's data.

Separately, investigative platform RISE project reported that SCL Group, a British strategic communication company affiliated to Cambridge Analytica, set up an office in Romania in 2011.

According to Facebook, academic Aleksandr Kogan, separately from his work as a University of Cambridge professor, made a personality app that gathered data which he then sold on to third parties.

Wylie claimed Cambridge Analytica used the data it had while speaking with Russian businesses.

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie told the Washington Post on Tuesday that in 2014 conservative strategist Steve Bannon, who would go on to be Trump's White House adviser, oversaw the firm's early efforts to collect Facebook data to build detailed profiles on millions of American voters.

Nix was secretly recorded by Channel 4 News appearing to suggest that Cambridge Analytica used a playbook of dirty tricks to discredit politicians.

In footage released Monday, Nix said the company could "send some girls" around to a rival candidate's house, suggesting that girls from Ukraine are handsome and effective in this role.

Travis Tomasi, a cybersecurity expert with Bozeman-based Wolfguard IT, says it doesn't take much to compromise your privacy. "But today, this very stern observation I gave that let my warning be heard across the Atlantic far away in California", he said.

CA denies using entrapment. However, after the firm missed the deadline, Denham told Britain's Channel 4 "I'll be applying to the court for a warrant".

"If the council thinks that this information is useful, perhaps it might actually pay people for it and not sneakily obtain vast amounts of totally irrelevant data from people who have no idea what they are giving up", he said.

One comment on a Reddit thread about the #DeleteFacebook movement joked "the rally cry to delete from Facebook is now trending as a hashtag on Twitter - another social media site that gathers data on users". The Federal Trade Commission has opened an investigation into Facebook to determine whether the use of the data violated privacy protections.
