Democratic governor's race narrows on eve of primary election

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is one of the most vulnerable governors up for election. "Governor Rauner possibly has a broader appeal across the middle of the political spectrum, and whoever wins that primary, I'm going to support them".

"It appears this election is going to be a lot closer than anyone thought it would be - especially the governor", former Rauner adviser Lance Trover told TPM on Monday.

Voters will finally have their say in Illinois' primary election Tuesday.

Billionaire J.B. Pritzker has saturated the airwaves with ads in his three-way primary against Chris Kennedy, the son of Robert F. Kennedy and a millionaire in his own right, and IL state Sen. But Ives is attracting the strong support of both national and local anti-abortion activists, many of whom are accusing Rauner of flip-flopping on public funding of abortion before signing a bill expanding it last September.

It's been a record-breaking year in terms of political fundraising.

Billionaire J.B. Pritzker has won the Democratic primary for IL governor, setting up a general election that could be the most expensive governor's race in USA history.

State Board of Elections spokesman Matt Dietrich said state officials have been working with the Department of Homeland Security to test Illinois' voting registration systems weekly for vulnerabilities.

In the governor's race, the primary could narrow the field to a billionaire and a multi-millionaire.

His challenger Jeanne Ives calls the charge "an act of desperation". However, a number of voters are still undecided.

As a self-declared fan of Northern Illinois University, which has experienced enrollment and tuition problems for years, Rauner said he wants to provide the school with more resources. He has his own GOP challenge from state Rep. Jeanne Ives.
