Ambedkar statue vandalised, RK Singh condemns

But this didn't stop there, in few hours Lenin's second statue was vandalised in Tripura state and this spread like wild fire and other states got involved. The incident was noticed when the residents of Bhagwanpur Bahugara village found the broken nose of Modi's statue.

Vandalisation of statues of ideological leaders and icons were first reported from Tripura soon after state assembly elections were announced.

Following the Tripura incident, a statue of Dravidian icon Periyar, also known as EV Ramaswamy, was vandalised.


The incident sparked protests by members of the Dalit community. A senior district police officer said that two people, identified as Muthuraman and Francis, damaged the bust at Tirupattur in an inebriated state. Mishra said the police rushed to the spot and pacified the irate residents.

BJP leader H Raja posted on Facebook, which was later deleted, he wrote "Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India?" It drew condemnation from several political parties in the state. "An additional police force has been deployed in the area to avoid any confrontation", Srivastava said. In another case, Dr. BR Ambedkar's statue was vandalized by unidentified people in Mawana, Meerut in Uttar Pradesh on March 6.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee A bust of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee was on Wednesday vandalised in south Kolkata by seven persons, including a woman, allegedly belonging to a left-wing group "Radical", police said.All the seven persons have been arrested, city police commissioner Rajiv Kumar said.


Last year, the Dalit community's call to install a statue of Ambedkar and the objection of the Thakur community to the proposal led to major caste violence.

"Fencing will be done around the statue to stop recurrence of such incidents", he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the incidents of vandalism of statues and said that stern action would be taken against those found guilty.
