What's The History of Mardi Gras? How Do You Celebrate?

According to a recent poll, Mardi Gras remains an incredibly popular festival in France with seven out of ten French people celebrating it. "Some people still have damage they're working on but they're out here smiling, they're happy, they're singing, it's just great", said Citrus Park resident Paul Pedigo. "Mardi Gras Indians began appearing in the late 19th century; the first group was the Creole Wild West from the Seventh Ward".

More than 70 Mardi Gras themed floats will travel to the Briscoe King Pavilion, featuring a host of colorful characters in some of the best costumes you'll see this side of New Orleans. She explained the holiday originates from the Roman Catholic tradition of people taking all of the rich food they abstain from during Lent and having a big feast with it on the day before Lent starts.

As we celebrate Fat Tuesday, staring Ash Wednesday and 40 days of Lent straight in the face, it's a good time to remember, reflect and, possibly, make sure you have money for bail, as the Carnival season comes to an end with Mardi Gras. He died 14 years ago, but his family is continuing his legacy at each annual parade. While the official colors of Fat Tuesday are purple, green, and gold (representing justice, faith, and power, respectively), you can't deny the merriment of this full spectrum of hues.

A total of three people were killed and five others were wounded in three separate shootings in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. The city of New Orleans is not involved in coordinating Mardi Gras parades; its only involvement is to issue parade permits. There are various bars, jazz lounge and dance clubs that give you a taste of the Big Easy right here in the Big Apple.
