It may not show up on the stat sheet, but this Fighting Illini basketball team is making progress in the right direction.

Carsen Edwards scored a career-high 40 points and Dakota Mathias added 18 to help No. 9 Purdue outlast IL in a 93-86 victory on Thursday night.

IL hung tight in this game, after Trent Frazier got a steal and hit a three pointer, the Illini led 53-52 in the second half. He led IL with 28 points and has scored at least 20 in four straight games. The Illini responded with a 10-3 run to close out the half trailing 43-38.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Gary Clark scored 10 of his 17 points during Cincinnati's decisive spurt, and the Bearcats shook off consecutive losses by beating short-handed CT for their fifth straight win over the Huskies. The Golden Gophers are led by Jordan Murphy, who is ranked seventh in the Big Ten in scoring at 17.1 points per game. Lovelace's sophomore season record has stood since 1994, and Harris is poised to break the per game average record as well, snaring 8.8 per game on the year after grabbing 12 Wednesday.

"We just happened to have the best guard in our league".

The Boilermakers shot over 58 percent from the field and eleven 3-pointers.

Williams came into the game shooting just 6 percent from beyond the arc, but made all three of his attempts on Thurdsday.

IL kept the game tight as Leron Black led the Fighting Illini with 28 points and Trent Frazier added 20. Edwards is averaging 14.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game this season for the No. 9 Boilermakers.

Dakota Mathias added 18 points for Purdue, while Isaac Haas chipped in 10. Purdue outrebounded the Illini 42-31, including 13 offensive boards, improving to 7-1 in Big Ten play when beating their opponents on the glass. Purdue shot 31 free throws, making 26 of those attempts, and all that IL tried to do to thwart the Boilermakers' effort was all for naught, thanks in part to the percentages that Purdue ended up shooting.

"We fought, we competed", coach Brad Underwood said.

IL hits the road to face Rutgers on Sunday.

Purdue plays its final regular season game Saturday, hosting Michigan State for a 2 p.m. ET tip, live on the Big Ten Network.
