In future, spam messages which have been forwarded more than 25 times will be labelled as "forwarded many times", and this will alert the user about its spammy nature.

"It is already enabled by default in the newest WhatsApp Google Play beta for Android 2.18.12".

A similar warning is also shown displayed on a frequently forwarded message when it's received, although the feature is described as still in development and it's not clear whether WhatsApp intends to officially roll it out or not.

With over 1.2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp has grown to become the most popular messaging app on the planet, and with so many users onboard it's a major platform for fraudsters and spammers to try and dupe a lot of people.

The most common spam messages is one that warns users that they will soon have to start paying for the service unless the messages gets forwarded to a certain number of your contacts. In fact WhatsApp has made a decision to do more to fight against spam, introducing a new interesting feature. Spammers can not use Broadcast Lists feature because the spammer's number won't be in their recipient's contact list and thus they will not be able to receive the message.

At the moment, WhatsApp does block spam messages which have been forwarded over 25 times. It says "A message you are forwarding has been forwarded many times".

WhatsApp appears to be testing a new feature aimed at trying to limit the spread of chain letter style spam messages and tackle viral fakes spreading on its platform. The only way that it will stay free is if you are a frequent user i.e. you have at least 10 people you are chatting with.

WhatsApp will be able to identify spam messages that have been shared multiple times. These spam messages trick the user into believing it is true and elicit sensitive banking and personal information.

It seems WhatsApp are doing all they can to help users spot spam messages and therefore reduce their chances of being duped.

It is also possible to find a Report spam button in the Contact Info section, that will allow you to report a saved contact/business.

We recommend to always report the contact when you receive spam messages.
