A VA study released in 2016 said that the risk of suicide was 19 percent among male veterans when compared to male civilians, and 2 1/2 times higher among female veterans than among civilian women. "We will not rest until all of America's great veterans receive the care they've earned through their incredible service and sacrifice to our country". "That is our unwavering commitment to those who served under the flag of the United States".

The order gives the secretaries of defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs 60 days to develop a joint action plan to provide "seamless access to mental health treatment and suicide prevention resources for transitioning uniformed service members in the year" following service. Around 20 veterans commit suicide every day, a galling statistic that's been a sad norm since at least 2013. After leaving the service, many veterans experience changes in their interpersonal relationships, financial stability, careers and health.

After an emergency session to discuss Mr Trump's remarks, a group of 54 African ambassadors to the United Nations said it was "concerned at the continuing and growing trend from the U.S. administration toward Africa and people of African descent to denigrate the continent and people of colour".

In 2014, 244 OH veterans took their own lives. He says this administration needs to focus on a more comprehensive approach to fixing issues facing veterans rather than executive orders.

"It's really important that the next generation of warfighters does not suffer what the prior generation warfighters have suffered", Howard said. A typical report from President Obama's or President Bush's physicals summarized their test results and pronounced the leaders healthy and likely to remain so for the duration of their time in office.

The Clay Hunt SAV Act requires an independent system-wide assessment of existing VA mental health programs to better determine areas for improvement and consolidation.

There are significant challenges to the order, though.

If Trump had any patient's apprehension going into his exam - which he'll fly to aboard his Marine One helicopter - he wasn't letting on. He says no cost should be spared when it comes to mental health. The administration hopes Tuesday's executive order makes life easier for new veterans.

While making mental healthcare a top priority for transitioning veterans, Jean Somers hopes this doesn't slow mental healthcare for current Veterans.

"They get out of the military and have nobody to talk to, nobody to speak to", the president said. "That would be very tragic", she said.

Brown encourages any veterans, service members, or their families who are in crisis to seek help and assistance by contacting the Veterans Crisis Line, a confidential resource that connects veterans, their family or friends with qualified VA responders, at 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1.

It's not clear. When reporters on Air Force One asked spokesman Hogan Gidley whether there would be any kind of psychiatric evaluation he said: "No".
