Texas high school leaves 1 student wounded; suspect in custody, police say

A sheriff's office dispatcher, Debra Murray, said the shooting took place at Italy High School. His or her condition is unknown.

Officials at nearby Stafford Elementary School confirmed to local that both it and Italy High School were under lockdown. He said he could not share the shooting suspect's disciplinary history at the school.

"This is a trying time for our community and our school", he said.

A female student was wounded in the shooting and airlifted to a hospital, according to multiple reports. He said it was also working to make sure grief counseling was available for students.

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reported, citing a text sent to parents from the school superintendent, that one victim was taken to a hospital.

ECSO posted to Facebook an update saying students, under police guard, were being moved as the investigation continues.

The Ellis County sheriff's office announced the shooting on Twitter. It had 281 students enrolled past year. My heart breaks for these families and these children.

Italy is about 45 miles south of Dallas.
