Snow blankets North Carolina, making roads treacherous

A winter storm that killed two people in Louisiana and one in Houston has blanketed the South in snow and ice, causing traffic pileups, canceling hundreds of flights and prompting officials to urge people to stay indoors through Thursday afternoon, when a considerable warm-up is expected.

More than 1,500 U.S. flights have been canceled and even more delayed, with airports in Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans and Boston tallying the most cancellations, flight tracking site Flightaware.com says.

Brian Short, director of Emergency Operations in Vance County, said late Wednesday morning that even as predicted snowfall totals for the area continued to increase, his department was not anticipating any major problems from the snowfall as long as residents stayed off the roads as conditions deteriorated.

Duke Energy says more than 9,000 customers are without power in North Carolina.


- Snow is falling across central and eastern North Carolina, but, for now, it won't impact Thursday night's ACC showdown between North Carolina State and Wake Forest.

The governors of Georgia, North Carolina and Louisiana declared states of emergency due to severe winter weather conditions, which caused multiple auto accidents during rush-hour traffic, officials said.


Video from CNN affiliate WGCL showed vehicles stopped on icy Atlanta streets, including a city transit bus that apparently couldn't go any farther on a slick stretch.

Earlier Wednesday in Surry County, Highway 52 near Interstate 74 was shut down for about four hours after a fiery tractor trailer accident, plus a wreck where another tractor trailer ran off the road. Ice skating to work would be easier than driving. The temperature was around 10 degrees when she was found. Snow tapered across the state by late Wednesday, but wind chill warnings remained in effect overnight.

Classes were canceled at a number of universities Wednesday in the South, including Georgia Tech, the University of Georgia, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and North Carolina State University.

After raking North Carolina, forecasters expected the system to move offshore.
