But a heart irregularity he revealed publicly for the first time this week might be the most troubling of the bunch.

"It revealed I had a slight heartbeat irregularity called a flat or inverted T wave".

"I have this thickening of my left ventricle and there's a bit of scar tissue". McIlroy explained that he is fully recovered from that and excited about teeing it up next week at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship to kick off his 2018 season.

A four-time major victor, McIlroy claimed the most recent of those at the 2014 PGA Championship.

McIlroy says he has a heart ailment that will have to be monitored regularly but is not expected to affect his play.

McIlroy, who failed to win a tournament last season for just the second time in his professional career, ended his year early due to a rib problem, but that is no longer an issue.

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever - I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spine and all was OK", McIlroy told the Telegraph.

Health concerns aside, McIlroy sounded an extremely optimistic tone about once again establishing himself as one of the sport's top contenders, proclaiming: "Maybe before, I had to win from the front. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said. "I don't care about the world rankings".

"Yesterday, I did an interview with the Daily Telegraph where I spoke about a range of topics regarding the last three months of my life", McIlroy wrote. "I knew within myself that I couldn't compete at the end of last season because I hadn't done the work beforehand, and that's because I hadn't been fit enough and if you can't practice, you can't compete". "I'm not hung up on it".
