The former United defender told BT Sport on the Sanchez saga: "I was having this discussion with my old mates yesterday and today".

The in-demand Chilean will not play for the Gunners on Sunday and the latest reports suggest that United have an edge over City in securing his services.

It is well known that Sanchez has been angling for a move to the Etihad, hoping to go this month after a £60m summer deadline day move fell through.

The Chile global has refused to sign a new Arsenal contract with his current deal expiring in the summer, and United and City are reportedly both keen on recruiting him this month.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted Sanchez will leave his club this month, with the final decision on where he will end up now set to be handed over to the player and his advisers. "He [Sanchez] is being vague at the moment".

Sanchez has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City over the past six months, while Manchester United and Liverpool have also reportedly joined the race.

Wenger said: "Yes. Don't read too much into it though because not even I know which way it will go".

Arsenal do not yet have an agreement in place to sign Bordeaux forward Malcom.

"I think Mkhitaryan is one of the best players in the Premier League when he is at his best and Arsenal need star talent if they lose Sanchez and Ozil".

Wilshere was anxious to make a good impression on his return to the club where he spent last season on loan while Arsenal were keen to register their first victory since the turn of the year. Iwobi slotted an excellent pass inside left-back Charlie Daniels, allowing Bellerin to advance on Begovic before beating the keeper with a powerful angled shot.
