Instagram DMs now show when you were last active

This, certainly, was Instagram's motivation behind adding the feature. Facebook has been beta-testing that app in a few limited countries on Android and the iPhone. This new update just brings Facebook one step closer towards spinning Instagram into a messaging platform all its own. Only people you follow or have previously DM'd will see how many minutes or hours ago you were scrolling through your feed.

For those of you who find this addition somewhat intrusive, thankfully it's not hard to disable.

The new "Show Activity Status" option is enabled by default inside of Instagram's settings. Fortunately, the company has given its users the ability to disable the activity status, making it possible to stop others from snooping on your habits. If a given contact is using Instagram at that moment, you'll see the words "Active Now". It will also read "active now" if that user is currently on the app. Again, if you don't like people knowing this sort of thing, turn off the feature in settings. That said, I think a way to opt out should be mandatory - and I'm thankful Instagram gives you one. The notifications, similar to those you see on Facebook's Messenger, appear in light gray text beneath your followers' names in your inbox.

As Instagram becomes ever more popular, it's also becoming more and more like Facebook, and that's, to be honest, kind of scary.
