A Dallas County grand jury has indicted Wesley Mathews in the capital murder of his 3-year-old daughter.

A grand jury in Dallas County, Texas, on Friday returned several charges, most notably capital murder, against Wesley Mathews.

The medical examiner ruled Sherin, who was from India, died from homicidal violence but did not release additional details, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.

Sini Mathews, Sherin's mother, was also indicted with a charge of child abandonment against her.

The day after Sherin's body was found, her adopted father told police the little girl's death was caused by choking on milk, according to an arrest affidavit.

"Wesley Mathews then physically assisted the 3-year-old in drinking the milk", an affidavit states.

If convicted on the capital murder charge, Wesley Mathews faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Friday's indictment adds abandoning a child and tampering with evidence, second-degree allegations punishable by two to 20 years in prison.

"I want to thank the Richardson Police Department for their tireless dedication to this case", she said.

An autopsy released earlier this month revealed that 3-year-old Sherin Mathews died of "homicidal violence" after she disappeared from her adopted family's Richardson home on October 7, 2017. "We are committed to continue our diligent and steadfast efforts to seek justice on their behalf".

Reports also said that doctors alleged that Sherin had injuries suggesting significant abuse was inflicted upon her after she was adopted.

District Attorney Faith Johnson stood with the Richardson police chief and others who for months have worked on this case.

He "then admitted to removing the body from the home".

The Richardson girl was reported missing in October and was found dead in a culvert weeks later.

"We have some information as to what might have happened", Johnson said.

Recently, the adoption agency the Mathews used for Sherin has been suspended by the Indian government after it said the agency showed negligence in assessing potential adoptive parents.
