The Ford Ranger mid-size pickup truck is back in a big way after disappearing from the US market after the 2011 model year.

Dudenhoeffer said all conventional auto shows have lost some of their luster in recent years, but Detroit is even more diminished than Frankfurt or Tokyo, in part because so numerous vehicles presented are massive gas guzzlers that have no overseas market.

Pickup trucks accounted for for 13.7 percent of US auto sales, according to a report from Kelly Blue Book.

Big pickup sales grew nearly 6 percent past year to almost 2.4 million, even though overall USA auto sales dropped 2 percent. At the same time, space devoted to passengers and to cargo has been increased, the bed is the most practical in its category and the choice of versions and powertrains has been beefed up. There's also a touchpad to control infotainment functions on the 10.2-inch dashboard screen.

A 10% jump in fuel economy could help. This innovative new seating concept flexibly adapts to the requirements of different users and is especially well-suited to mobility alternatives such as vehicle sharing. It combines an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive.

The interior has also been revamped.

The vehicle is among the first of two new models planned this year and will come with a six-year, 72,000-mile warranty - double what it has been. Competing against big sellers like the Honda CR-V, the 2019 Cherokee will likely have a starting price around $24,500. High on the list of priorities for the automaker was a weight-loss regimen for the truck, and the 2019 version is up to 450 lbs lighter than its predecessor. The redesigned Forte gets an average of 35 miles per gallon in combined city-highway driving, up about 3 mpg from the previous model. Pricing on the Edge and Edge ST hasn't yet been released. There are small "air curtains" along the headlights that direct air around the front wheels for better efficiency.

The Michigan-designed Avalon will arrive in showrooms in late spring.

Ford is preparing to launch a special edition version of the Mustang Bullitt GT at the Detroit Motor Show 2018, reports suggest. When installed in a Ford F-150 the engine can achieve 37 mpg according to Achates.

Molly McQueen - granddaughter of "Bullitt" star Steve McQueen - introduced the 2019 Mustang Bullitt on Sunday at the Detroit auto show. Ford didn't reveal the cost. "Trying to get the company to be as fit as it can to compete in the categories it's always competed in".

The company readily acknowledges that its appearance hasn't changed much in nearly four decades. It's still powered by a 4-liter V8 with 416 horsepower. There is also a new turbocharged 3-liter Duramax diesel engine. The diesel trucks will arrive in USA dealeships in spring 2018. It's marginally longer and wider than a Porsche Cayenne, but sits much lower to the ground, which Lexus says indicates its performance intentions. The 192-horsepower sDrive28i goes on sale later this spring.

Besides Yamaha wood and aluminum cabin accents, Apple CarPay and dynamic auxiliary turn signals will be standard, as well as an adaptive variable suspension that should enhance ride and handling.
