They were up at night and slept during the day.

The DA also shared really disturbing details about what went on in this house for years. They would "buy food and apparently let the children see it, but not eat it", CNN says.

"The punishment would last for weeks, even months, at a time", he said as reporters grimaced at some of the acts that were bullet-pointed by the district attorney.

Authorities claim they were alerted to the matter when a 17-year-old girl escaped the home through a window and called the emergency services. When authorities asked the 17-year-old whether there were any pills or medication inside the house, she didn't know what those were.

Officers say numerous victims, who range in age from 2 to 29, do not look their age because of their levels of emaciation.

The children faced severe malnourishment.

The couple's children range in age from two to 29, but the torture and false imprisonment charges do not include the two-year-old.

In photos captured Thursday that were released by Associated Press, local parents and children are seen gathered outside the Turpin home where presents, balloons and teddy bears were left on the front door step.

When authorities searched the home in Perris, 60 miles south-east of Los Angeles, investigators found some siblings shackled to furniture in the four-bedroom house. When one of the victims tried to flee while hog-tied, the parents allegedly started chaining them to their beds. They say some of the captives were so malnourished and dirty, it took them a while before they found out some of the children were actually adults between 18 and 29 years old.

They found several children shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in the dark, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. No torture charge has been filed on the two-year-old who appeared to be in good health. The husband was also charged with a single count of lewd conduct with a child. The victim was a female under the age of 14, according to Hestrin.

Some 12 counts of torture, seven counts of dependent adult abuse, six counts of child abuse, and 12 counts of false imprisonment have been made against the couple.

Hestrin added that the children were allowed to write in journals and that officials had recovered "hundreds of them", adding they "are going to be strong evidence of what occurred in that home".

If they were not chained, the children were often locked in their rooms.

The children were nearly always either shackled to their beds or kept in separate rooms, and were fed very little, according to the D.A.
